BNW 120 pages

In the last of the book, it kind of got confusing. Well, Bernanrd brought John and Linda back to the world, and he showed john his father, which was the director. The director got embarrassed because everyone was laughing, rejected him and quit his job. In the sum of all things, Bernard started realizing that their world was a set-up, tried showing some of the kids it was and got sent to the iceland. Johns mother died, and john couldnt take the fact that everyone was laughing because they thought death as something good and funny, not scared and sad. Well, John ended up hanging himself and thats really the way it ended.

ALDOUS HUXLEY

Aldous Huxley was born on July 26, 1894 in Godalming, England. As a child he grew up learning at his fathers botanical lab. Later on, he went to school at Hillside, he was always being watched because his mom was his teacher. He then went on to Eton college where he studied but then he became ill. The illness left him mostly blind for two to three years. Once he got better he went and studied English literature at Bailliol college. He worked at the technologically-advanced Brunner and Mond chemical plant in Bellingham Teaside. After working there Huxley then wrote his novel, Brave New World.

Huxley moved on and worked as a farm labourer where he is said to have met a lot of interesting figures. In 1919 he married and moved out to California in 1937. While he was living in California he did a couple of movie scripts because he was know for writing good papers. He once wrote the synopsis of Alice and wonderland for Walt Disney, but they rejected the script due to the their was some barrier in the understanding of it.

In 1939 Huxley started to use the Bates Method hoping that he would recover his eyesight. While using this method he was inspired to write a book called The Art Of Seeing. Huxley believed that the Bates Method worked, but while giving a speech once he started pulling in the paper closer and closer to his eyes. It was then exposed that Huxley had not gained any eyesight but that he was just remembering his speeches.

Huxley was also known for taking psychedelic drugs, mainly LSD. It is believed that in 1930 he took peyote with the Mystic Aleister Crowley. He was later proscribed to mescaline by his psychiatrist in 1953. Huxley wrote a number of essays which depicted his experiences while on his psychedelic drugs. Hippies were really interested in his writings. Huxley was so addicted to LSD that even on his death bed he took 100 micrograms as he was dying.

Wikipedia said that working at the chemical plant was a source in the book. I believe Huxley took what he saw and knew from working there to tie it in to his book only in a different way. If you think about it, in the book Huxley talked alot about how humans were conditioned to be specific members of the caste sytem. At the chemical lab Huxley probably witnessed a lot of things being engineered to do specific things.

In the book, he used the somas for the people to be happy and brainwashed. He probably used his experiences of drug use to elborate in the book on what people feel. In 1930 when Huxley took peyote it must have made him feel good. I researched the effects that peyote gives you and it said it gives people a enlighted and happy feeling. This is what probably lead him to putting it in the book with a different name. One of the descriptions of soma use in the book says that it would relax you if mad or angry. Many of the times that soma was used it was used to calm one of the characters in the book down.

Huxley had a crazy interesting life. He seemed to have been sort of crazy with the drugs, but at the same time doing good in his life. To become blind and then write something so sophisticated as BNW is amazing to me. This guy really thought over his head, I do too, but I could have never came up with something like this.

Historical Significant

I researched on the historical significance of Brave New World and came upon a essays relating to this topic. The point of finding historical significance of the book is to show how this novel is a fine piece of literature that should be read in literature class. Also I am going to try and find out the purpose Huxley had in this "over the top" book.

“In the first chapter, the D.H.C. proudly explains the biochemical technology that makes possible the production of virtually identical human beings and, in doing so, introduces Huxley’s theme of individuality under assault”(Cliff Notes). Even though it is kind of crazy, he explains what his book is going to be about. I think the main idea was to open up peoples mind on how the world would be if the government wanted complete "peace". The "government" in this book not only created the people but also brain washed them to feel no love and to have no intelligence. From what Ive read, the main idea is to open the readers mind to the fact that the governments in the world are taking away the right to think and function as an individual. Different things going on around Huxley’s time probably lead him to feel this way. He was clearly taking current events during his time and tying them into his book to show people how messed up the government is in his made up world.

Huxley argues, control through reward poses a greater threat to human freedom because, unlike punishment it can be introduced unconsciously and continued indefinitely, with the approval and support of the people being controlled (Cliff notes). What I think the author is saying is, society will become dumb to the fact that the government is controlling us because, the government gives the people something they want to take their worries away. This is what he wanted people to realize so they could prevent it from happening. Biographies say that Huxley believes in a free minded and individualistic society.“The literal consumption of soma-like drugs also captures Huxley’s attention. By the 1950s, readily available tranquilizers adjusted people to a maladjusted culture, smoothing out any inconvenient instincts of resistance, just as a soma- holiday eliminated the recognition of unhappiness”(cliff notes). So, the government was already creating a drug to take people away from the reality of life, but he is like Bernard in the sense he knows its so they government can take control.

This is a perfect example of the government gaining control of people by rewarding them. “Soma distribution!” shouted a loud voice. “In good order please. Hurry up there”, this is an example from Brave New World where all the kids are lined up to receive their "happy pills". All the kids get excited to receive there soma pills, because it makes them feel good. Yet they don't know this is a drug and is being used to brain wash them. This is how Huxley express the fact that the government will provide to gain, he uses a very obvious thing to show this so he can make people realize.

In the book the people said “Oh Ford” instead of "Oh God". Well, as we know Ford was the Creator of the assembly line, and in the book they did not want them believing there was creation basically. In the novel, they used the word Ford because the assembly line was used for the mass production of humans. He probably chose to do this because number one it is a machine, and number two everyone looked up to Henry Ford for the creation he had made. Here is another example, “the Conveyors moved forward, thirty-three centimeters an hour”. This was where all the humans were made, it is a big essential to BNWs society.

I'm not sure if this book should be read in a literature class. It was very over the top, and had a lot of craziness. I liked it and I felt it opened my mind to thinking about government corruption and the future. If this book was read in literature class I think it should be for a lit 12 because it is kind of confusing. I am the kind of person that likes to think over the top, I loved the book but I don't know if it is for everyone.

ACT 4

This is where the bike is falling down about to crash.
Iago is a smart sneaky one, its pissing me off how he is "on every ones side" but he is really putting all this BS together. It just frustrates me because you think someone would realize hes been telling ten zillion different stories.

Another thing is communication, its funny but frustrating to see also. If they would just talk to one another they would see that someone is lieing/setting it up. But instead the jealousy within Othello has taken over him and he doesn't want to discuss, he just wants to act.

I cant wait to see if cassio dies, or how Othello is going to die, i know its going to happen, but I don't understand how.

Mentor Log- 1 hour 30 min

I went to this bible study class on Thursday. We discussed the rapture and the second coming. I really got a lot of the same information I had but I guess it just gave me more security to my references. I found my information on the Internet but now I had somebody who knows what their talking about confirm my findings. Well, like I said in my paper the rapture is when god will return to earth taking all his believers to heaven, the dead and alive will rise up with him. Everyone will see him come in the second coming, even those who aren't his followers;
Revelation 1:7, . "Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him."
and the end of times people will start to be fake prophets;
Matthew 24:23-26, . "At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!or 'There He is!do not believe it. For false Christ's and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. So if anyone tells you, 'There He is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here He is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it."
Though this will be evident nobody knows when exactly its going to happen, in the bible he says not even his angels above know.
They said that Christians believers should not be misled and to not procrastinate in believing because he could come at any time
I got a few more notes, but pretty much everything we talked about I have in my research paper and other church sessions.

Mentor Log- 2 hours

I went in Dr.Moudsleys class second period last Wednesday and he talked to me about global warming and how it could cause us to reach the end. I took a good bit of notes and we discussed things such as what we think is causing it, things we can do to prevent it, and what might be to come.

He explained that humans are basically the ones who start it because they are making the rate go up by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. Co2 is called a greenhouse gas= traps even more heat; it comes from landfills and cow farts. Humans have to do with both. We make landfills and we raise the cows. Another cause is natural forces such as; volcanoes.

The things we can do to prevent this from getting worse are; using methane as energy source, and "go green". To Go Green is to decrease dependence on fossil fuel. You can use alternatives such as; wind mills, atomic power, solar energy, waves. He gave me examples of how to use these, and what technology can do right now that we don't use yet.

BAD NEWS!!
If the temperature of the earth goes up 5 degrees most plants will die.
In our life time within 10 years it could go up 1-2 degrees
If this happens:
Ice caps will melt
sea level will rise up 35 feet and all coastal cities will be under water such as; new york, Miami, Seattle..and so on.
increase temperature in the ocean will cause hurricane intensity and the weather will become unstable.
more floods, droughts, crops will be destroyed
therefore people will starve.

**We haven't reached the tipping point yet. In our life time either we could change things to slow down global warming, or everything could go downhill til the end.
